How Much Insurance Do I Need?

A young father once asked a financial advisor, "I already have a life insurance policy of ₹10 lakh. Is that enough?"

The advisor smiled and asked, "If your family receives ₹10 lakh today, how many years can they manage their monthly expenses, children's education, and loan repayments?"

The father quickly realized that he had never thought about insurance that way.

Many people buy life insurance based on what their friend bought or what fits their budget. But the real question is not, "How much insurance can I buy?" The real question is, "How much money will my family need if I'm not around?"

A simple rule of thumb is to have life insurance cover equal to at least 10 to 15 times your annual income.

For example, if your annual income is ₹10 lakh, your life insurance cover should ideally be between ₹1 crore and ₹1.5 crore.

You should also consider:

  • Outstanding home, car, or personal loans
  • Children's future education expenses
  • Family's monthly living expenses
  • Future goals and responsibilities

Remember, life insurance is not meant to make your family rich. It is meant to ensure that their lifestyle, dreams, and financial security do not suffer in your absence.

The right amount of insurance is the amount that allows your family to live with dignity and confidence, even when life takes an unexpected turn.
